The “Is Butter Better?” Debate

If you browse the dairy aisle in any supermarket, you will find what seems like hundreds of different brands of butter, margarine, and “I’m not butter or margarine but I’m trying to taste like them” spreads. How do you know which is best for your health? It’s a tough call. All of them derive 100 percent of their calories from fat. Butter has saturated fat, but it has no trans fat. Margarine has a good deal of trans fat but it also has unsaturated (good) fat. Check the label and choose a margarine with a total fat content of 3 grams or less. If you do choose margarine, look for a brand that contains phytosterols, natural plant compounds that have been shown to reduce LDL cholesterol by 6 to 15 percent when eaten in recommended amounts.

You might want to choose one of the butter substitutes or spreads such as Smart Balance or Country Crock Omega Light Plus or one of the many others like it on the market. These substitutes are made from vegetable oils and some do not have any trans fat or cholesterol. The best way to choose is by reading the label. Avoid any product that contains hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils to avoid trace amounts of trans fat. And then go by taste. None of these spreads really tastes like butter (even though they may claim otherwise). A petite pat of butter now and again won’t do you any harm; eating any of these options by the spoonful is not a good idea. So choose the one that works best for your family and spread it around–in moderation.
